Elizabeth Barton, the ‘Holy Maid of Kent’ Newington Village Hall ME9 7JJ Melanie Gibson-Barton will talk about Elizabeth Barton, known as ‘the Holy Maid of Kent’, a nun and mystic who challenged the king. It’s an intriguing and compelling story that would grace any television drama being full of mystery, mysticism, miracles and, finally, treason. It tells of a Kentish servant girl who rose to influence the most powerful men in the country, including Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas More. On October 23, Carol Stewart will be looking across the centuries to detail the history of Kent’s Caribbean community. The talks are open to all (£4 at the door, members free) and are followed by free light refreshments and an opportunity for social chat. The group meets monthly (except Jan. and Aug) on the fourth Thursday at 7pm and membership is available for £18pa.
