CHRISTIANITY IN TODAY’S WORLD
TUESDAY 19 AUGUST (2.15pm-4.15pm) THEOLOGY: CHRISTIANITY IN
TODAY’S WORLD with Rev Anthony Everett from Christ Church St Andrews Church,
Herne Bay. Is Christianity still relevant today? The Christian faith has been written
off in almost every decade but, increasingly so in Britain over the last few decades. And
yet, in 2023 it was estimated there were approximately 2.4 billion Christians in the
world. That is roughly one-third of the world’s population. We will look at why so many
people recognise it is still as relevant as it has ever been. And, what relevance it can
have for us in what is now often described as a post-Christian country.
Anthony Everett has been vicar of Christ Church St Andrews Herne Bay for 22 years.
THE POWER OF PRAYER with Rev Lawrence Tuck from St. Mary’s Church,
Reculver, Herne Bay. “Prayer releases the power of God in our lives” (Joyce
Meyer). Why do we pray? Is there any meaning to it? What is the possible benefit
of prayer? Who listens when we pray, and what, if anything, is the response?
Is unanswered prayer a sign that there is no God? What would the world look like
if all prayers were answered? Is prayer only of benefit for the spiritual you, or does
it also serve to improve your emotional, or even physical health? These are the kind
of questions Rev Tuck will be addressing and hoping that those listening will have
much to say on the subject. Rev Tuck will also be considering collective and individual
prayer and some different specific forms of prayer. We will contemplate prayer as a
power and an energy and as the “mirror of eternity” (Clare of Assisi).
